FAQ

The Questions You Have.
The Answers You Need.

CAN I WATCH MY CHILD DURING CLASS?

Dancity has a strict closed door policy. Our doors are closed, and we do not have a viewing window or screen, to all viewers including parents of our youngest dancers. Dancers perform differently knowing they are being watched and the little ones won't do much of anything with mom or dad in the room.

DO I NEED TO WAIT IN THE LOBBY WHILE MY CHILD IS IN CLASS?

No! Once dancers are in the studio with a teacher, parents are free to leave. Most parents head across the street to Kroger or Publix for some grocery shopping or grab a childfree coffee at Starbucks!

I WANT TO SEE IF MY CHILD LIKES DANCE BEFORE REGISTERING. CAN THEY ENROLL IN A TRIAL CLASS?

All trial classes must be scheduled with our office and are only allowed in classes with open enrollment. There is a nonrefundable trial fee of $25 PER CLASS. No exceptions. We do not offer trial classes for dancers in our primary program as children under 5 years of age tend to need more time to warm up and get comfortable. Instead, we highly encourage dancers to register and be part of a class for a full month. Once the full 4 weeks have passed, teacher and parent can meet and discuss whether or not it is a good fit for the dancer or if the dancer is simply not ready yet. One class is often not enough time for a young child to feel comfortable with the teacher, other dancers, and in a new environment. There is no penalty if the dancer does not continue classes after the month.  However, there are no credits or refunds for past classes for any reason.

MY CHILD HAS DANCE EXPERIENCE. CAN THEY SKIP THE EVALUATION PERIOD?

Dancity requires all dancers new to the studio to enroll in lower level classes so our staff can properly evaluate their current ability and future potential. Every studio/program has different teaching styes and different dancer requirements. In order to ensure studio-wide, quality training, new dancers must partake in this evaluation period to determine what level they will best perform in. In some cases, our staff can determine correct placement within the first few minutes of class. However, placement is case by case. It may be best for your child to be evaluated in class for a few weeks to ensure the best class placement for their natural skill level, movement quality, and potential.

MY CHILD DOESN'T HAVE FORMAL DANCE TRAINING. CAN THEY STILL ENROLL IN YOUR PROGRAM?

Absolutely! It is our staff's job to adapt to, and work with, every child's level and transform them into the best performer they can be. Dancity accepts dancers at every skill level and takes pride in not only training dancers, but creating dancers.

IF WE SIGN UP IN AUGUST, ARE WE COMMITTED TO STAY THROUGH MAY?

The short answer is no. As much as we would love for every dancer that walks through our doors to feel at home, we understand that there truly is a studio for everyone's needs. If we aren't the studio for you, we don't want to keep you from finding your dance home. There is no consequence for dropping classes or leaving the studio during the months of August through December. However, because recital choreography begins in January, there is a nonrefundable fee of $125 per dancer if a dancer quits at any point in January through May. Once choreography has been set, our staff and other dancers must change the routine they've been working on. The nonrefundable fee is a re-blocking fee for the work necessary due to your child's absense. For your child's sake, unless their is an unforeseen circumstance, we always suggest dancers remain in the program through December. We do require parents to fill out a Class Cancellation Form in the office for our records if you wish to drop a class or leave the studio.

WHAT IS YOUR CLASS SCHEDULE?

Contact our office for classes and scheduling. Our staff will happily give you recommendations and direct you toward classes appropriate for your child.

WHAT FORMS OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT?

Dancity requires every family to have a credit card saved on file. You then have the option to enroll in auto-pay. In studio, we accept cash, check, or card transactions. There is a service fee for each card transaction. We also accept payment by credit card on PayPal through our parent portal.

DOES DANCITY OFFER MAKE UP CLASSES FOR MISSED LESSONS DUE TO ILLNESS, VACATIONS, ETC?

Unfortunately, we do not. We encourage every dancer to attend their regularly scheduled classes each week as dance is a team sport. No two classes' curriculum overlaps enough for make up classes to be effective. If dancer's are injured or not contagious, we highly recommend they observe class. If you choose to miss class due to travel, that is up to you.

DOES DANCITY CLOSE FOR THE HOLIDAYS/HOW WILL I KNOW IF YOU'RE CLOSED DUE TO WEATHER?

Because all of our dancers are enrolled in different school districts, we do not follow the metro Nashville school calendar. It is safe to assume that we are always open, except on major holidays. If classes are cancelled due to weather, it will be posted on the website, social media, and an email will be sent out. Holiday closures will be posted in studio and on social media will a few weeks notice.

WHAT IS MY CHILD DOING IN CLASS?

Each class begins with a proper stretch and/or warm up based on the style of the class. Once dancers feel stretched and warm, they learn skills and exercises in the center of the room and work on progressions across the floor. Classes will eventually work on combinations based on the skills they previously learned as a learning tool to pick up choreography quickly and put transitional steps together. Young classes will typically end with a movement game as a form of self expression and more advanced classes will end class with improvisation.

WHY DOES YOUR PROGRAM FOLLOW THE SCHOOL YEAR/LAST 10 MONTHS?

Our staff's top priority is the safety of our dancers. Working with dancers for ten months, allows plenty of time to perfect technique; such as, proper alignment, strength, and flexibility. August through December, classes focus solely on the "hows and whys" of each dance style. All classes begin recital choreography in January and work on that the remainder of the year.

WHY DO YOU REQUIRE A DRESS CODE?

A dress code promotes unity and eliminates all distractions. Having a strict dress code helps dancers to be prepared and holds them accountable. Just like you would never show up to baseball practice without a glove, you should ever attend a dance class without proper shoes. Aside from safety and uniformity reasons, our dancers wear solid black, as black requires dancers to portray an emotion without the help of colorful attire assisting in the storytelling.

WHEN IS THE RECITAL?

Our annual recital is in May. All dancers are required to perform in the show. Exact weekend changes each year due to a variety of circumstances. Each winter, just before we break for the holidays, we do a big studio reveal that includes the recital date and title. Dance families loves to play along by trying to guess the title each year!
